Attorney Steven Laut

Steve Laut is an Intellectual Property Attorney and Partner at Sherman IP LLP. Steve is admitted to the Bar of the State of California (1999), and is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (2001).

EDUCATION

Steve received his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics with a concentration of courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo, B.A. in 1985. Steve was a student member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (I.E.E.E.). Steve has also taken master’s degree classes in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1985-1986, received a certificate in Kalman Filters and the Real World in 1986, and has taken Object Oriented Programming classes from the University of Irvine in 1994.

In December of 1998, Steve received his Juris Doctorate from Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, California and graduated with Scholastic Merit. While in Law School, Steve was appointed as Executive Editor of the Western State University Law Review, acted as Editor-in-Chief in the fall of 1997, and assisted in the ABA accreditation process. Steve was also appointed as the Student Bar Association’s Parliamentarian, and the Vice-Dean of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. Steve earned American Juris Prudence Awards for Real Property and Civil Procedure, was awarded the Distinguished Student of the Year in 1997-1998, was awarded the Student Bar Association (SBA) Student Leader of the Month in September 1997, was Chairmen of the Judiciary Committee, and was an Ex Officio member of all SBA committees.

LEGAL EXPERTISE

Steve is a specialist in patent prosecution and has experience in many Intellectual Property issues. Steve counsels and provides legal services in Intellectual Property related matters to include: domestic and foreign prosecution of utility and design patent applications, patent and technology licensing, infringement/validity/patentability analysis and opinion, pre-patent searches, patent and trademark clearance, design-around analysis, competitor product analysis, assisting in litigation matters, answering and drafting cease and desist matters, and patent transactional matters. Steve also has experience in trademark prosecution, trade secret and trade dress matters. Steve provides expert counseling in Intellectual Property to in-house attorneys, CEOs, entrepreneurs, experienced inventors and inexperienced inventors.

Steve is a member of numerous state bar organizations. Steve has previously practiced patent prosecution and Intellectual Property matters for clients such as Intel, Sun Microsystems, Sony, Ebay, Imperial Toy, and Ask.com. Steve has performed pro bono assistance and was a Law Review Faculty Advisor for the West Los Angeles School of Law.

While in law school, Steve worked full-time during the summer of 1997 as a clerk/extern for the California Court of Appeals, Fourth District, Division Three under Associate Justice E. Wallin (Ret.) and handled matters, such as: drafting civil, criminal, family and juvenile opinions/summaries and memoranda; performed judicial research; cite-checked opinions/summaries; and researched opinions for concurrence/dissent. Steve also worked with Professor Marcia Wilbur, Esq. as a research assistant at Western State University of Law.

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Steve had extensive work experience in Engineering in missile systems and simulation at General Dynamics, real-time avionics/aircraft simulation at Rockwell International, and real-time flight controls and avionics simulation at Northrop-Grumman.

GET TO KNOW STEVE

In his personal time, Steve practices mixed and traditional martial arts and weapons' training, lifts weights, practices boxing, and enjoys going to the batting cages. Due to his schedule, Steve gets on the elliptical and stationary bike a few times a week, and when he gets a chance, Steve loves to ride his custom Harley Davidson, working on cars, and has organized various charity events including fundraisers for cancer and helping underprivileged children.

Steve enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, and grilling several times a week. Steve and his family are avid sports fans and love watching sporting events. Steve loves to play with his four dogs and his Macaw, Mushugana (crazy bird), which are also part of the family.
