May 5, 2015 – ZEK’s Daniel B. Garrie to teach Westlaw webinar on Cyber Warfare for Lawyers: A Technical Survey of the Weapons Used in Battle

On May 5, 2015, ZEK’s Daniel B. Garrie will teach a Westlaw online seminar on defending against cyberwarfare. Among other things, he will discuss the unique threat cyber attacks pose as a force multiplier. With cyber warfare, any well-equipped individual can anonymously cause serious damage from thousands of miles away; it is the first time in history where you do not need to be a nation-state to wage war. Although there is no proof of a large-scale attack on US critical infrastructure, we have seen attacks in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and South Korea. In an effort to level the playing field, many emerging nation-states are heavily investing in cyber war capabilities, for they know they cannot compete in the traditional, kinetic sense. For now, attacks have been one-by-one, but the possibility of a large-scale attack on multiple institutions exists. He will discuss tell-tale signs of an attack and how organizations can respond to findings of a potential intrusion.
